Watching the World Cup in Phuket: Why It's a Sofa-Only Tournament This Time

Phuket runs eleven hours ahead of most European kick-offs and roughly half a day ahead of South American ones, which means a lot of World Cup football here happens late at night or in the small hours. Normally we'd point you at a few sports bars for the big games — but the rights situation in Thailand has changed that for this tournament. Here's what you need to know, and how to watch from the unit.

We've also put together a dedicated companion page at worldcup.phuket-rentals.live with kick-off times converted to Phuket local, the current fixture list, and step-by-step setup notes. Bookmark it — we'll keep it updated through the tournament.

Why the sports bars aren't an option this time

The Thai government did not buy a commercial broadcast licence for the World Cup. That means pubs, sports bars, restaurants and hotels in Thailand are not legally permitted to show the matches in public — even if they have a paid subscription, a commercial venue can't screen the games for customers. The usual suspects in Patong, Chalong and Rawai will be quiet for the football.

If you turn up at a bar expecting the match, you'll most likely find it not showing. Some venues may risk it for marquee games, but it's not something we can point guests at in good faith, and enforcement has been active in previous tournaments.

The one legal route inside Thailand: Monomax

For this World Cup, Monomax holds the Thai streaming rights. It's the only legitimate way to watch the matches from inside Thailand. Every unit we rent has a smart TV and decent Wi-Fi, so the setup is straightforward:

  • Sign up at monomax.me or via the Monomax app. A Thai phone number helps but isn't always required — an email address and a card usually gets you through.

  • Buy the World Cup package. Pricing has typically been in the low hundreds of baht per month, with a tournament pass option.

  • Cast from your phone to the TV in the unit, or sign in directly on the smart TV if it supports the app.

Commentary is in Thai. There's no licensed English-language feed available inside Thailand for this tournament, so if you want native-language commentary you'll need to go the VPN route below.

Watching via your home subscription (VPN)

If you already pay for a service back home that carries the matches — BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Fox Sports, Optus Sport, beIN in your home country, etc. — a VPN set to your home country usually works on the smart TVs in our units. Bring your own login. This is the easiest way to get English (or your own language) commentary.

A quick note: this covers your personal viewing in a private rental. It is not a workaround for the public-screening restriction, and we'd ask you to keep it to the unit.

FIFA+ for the surrounding football

For warm-up friendlies, qualifiers and smaller tournaments not picked up by the paid broadcasters, FIFA+ streams a surprising amount free and works fine on the in-unit TVs.

Practical notes for early kick-offs

Kick-off times in Thailand mean a lot of matches early morning 2 am. local. Since you'll be watching from the unit, plan the food side in advance — most kitchens around the condos are not open, but Grab Food and LINE MAN both run through the night and will deliver to any of our buildings. 7-Eleven is 24-hour and within a few minutes' walk of every unit if you just need beers and snacks.
